Travel photo secrets from a professional – make your photos really special

Monday, May 18th, 2009

As a professional photographer, my ultimate goal is to travel all over the world, building amazing experiences and taking great pictures every step of the way. Vacation and travel photos bring me back to the moment I captured in time, and I smell that sea air or exotic market place once more. Even if you only shoot pictures when you’re on vacation, having a little knowledge beforehand will help you bring back gorgeous photos that capture your moments and bring back great memories!

I’d like to offer some tips on taking beautiful vacation photos. First, if you’re looking at a horizontal object, such as a person or animal running or a horizon, take a horizontal picture (longer than tall). This will give your photograph weight. If you’re looking at a vertical object, such as a tall building or trees, you’ll probably want to shoot a vertical shot (taller than long) to give your photograph upward movement and help it feel more airy. Taking pictures from new, different angle will also give you some fun and interesting viewpoints that may not always get from taking perfectly straight-on shots of your subjects.

Another good tip is to use the “rule of thirds”.  This rule, really a guideline, helps you frame your main subject so that it fills either 1/3 or 2/3 of the viewfinder. This helps the person looking at the picture know exactly who or what the focus is of the picture, and avoids the wandering eye problem where the viewer is not sure what to look at. Using the rule of thirds will give your pictures great proportions, and is a tip used often by the pros in everyday shooting.

If you’re not sure how to work with shutter speeds and apertures, make sure your camera is set to full automatic mode. If you’re comfortable adjusting these settings, try shooting moving objects such as waterfalls with a slightly slower shutter speed to give the moving water a smooth silky effect. To capture the water droplets as separate tiny objects, use a faster shutter speed. Experiment. It’s fun!  Don’t be afraid to shoot a lot of pictures using different settings.  You never know when one will be really outstanding.

When taking photos to enlarge and print to canvas, remember to consider the colors of the room where you’ll hang the photo. If you’ve got a peaceful blue and lavender room, bright red flowers won’t harmonize with your décor. A photo to canvas will catch the eye of everyone who enters the space, and be a nice focal point.  You want it to match the room’s décor and mood.

To order your photo canvas, upload your favorite picture (between 2 and 10 Mb) to www.PhotoArtPeople.com or send a photo copy to our mailing address. Delivery time is less than 10 days, so your canvas will arrive before you’ve shaken all the sand out of your flip flops! You may think that a photo canvas print costs at least as much as a one-way plane ticket, but you’ll find a photo printed on canvas is surprisingly affordable. We’re so sure you’ll love it we even offer a 110% money-back guarantee!

So start sorting through those vacation pictures, and order a photo to canvas today!
